2017 Ride Date:
August 26, 2017
We are planning to change the route from York to Nelson, and ….
we are also trying to develop an alternate route for more experienced riders. We will keep you updated ……..
Saturday, August 27, 2016 was the perfect day for the “York 38 Special.” The weather was textbook, not too hot, not too cold, and no smoke. The only downside was a lower than usual rider count.
We had many emergency medical personnel and a physician on aid stations who came from other volunteer fire departments in the area to help out. The care of our bike riders is always a high priority. Communication between aid stations was better than ever, and York’s Fire Chief was on the course ensuring everything was running smoothly. We even had Reach Air land a helicopter at the Indian Flats aid station for show. We appreciate Reach Air, as they supported York Fire Rescue’s training on several occasions in the past.
Our youngest 38-Special rider was 12 years old and he was ready to ride. He preferred the downhill of the ride to the uphill though – who can blame him. He said he had fun. He had ridden the Lucky 13 Family Ride twice already and he was prepared for the 38-mile ride. He and his parents finished in 6 hrs. 46 minutes. Way to go!!! We also had an 80-year old gentleman riding (#253) who finished in 6 hrs. 31 minutes, 39 minutes faster than the slowest gent on the 38 Special Ride. I am awestruck!!!
Volunteer York firefighters were on the course manning aid stations or patrolling. We also had York residents who helped at aid stations, working the registration table, or take time at the start and finish line. And again, let me not forget the wonderful bakers in our community who supply the goodies for the aid stations. YORK VOLUNTEERS ROCK!!! A big thank you to David, Joelle, Jean and Peggy for helping to pull everything together in the last two months. And thank you, Juanita, for faithfully updating our website. I couldn’t have done all the detail work by myself. Also thank you to my wonderful husband who did more than anyone realizes. You all rock! Also thank you Bullock Contracting, who stopped improvement work on Nelson Road for our ride. Thank you to the US Forest Service for granting us the permit for our fundraiser to ride on Helena National Forest roads.
